Smitha V. Sumakumari

M.Psy, Doctoral Candidate, Clinical Psychology

Smitha brings more than 15 years of clinical experience to her work with trauma survivors, injured workers, and first responders navigating some of the most difficult chapters of their lives. She is completing her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Adler Graduate Professional School in Toronto, where she also earned her Master of Psychology in Clinical and Counselling Psychology. She holds an additional Master's degree in Psychology from Kerala University, India, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Behaviour Science Technology from George Brown College.

Smitha has significant experience treating PTSD and Complex PTSD, working with clients recovering from workplace accidents, harassment, and other traumatic experiences — including many referred through WSIB. She understands the layered impact of trauma on daily functioning, relationships, and identity, and she brings a steady, trauma-informed presence to clients navigating the WSIB claims and recovery process alongside their psychological healing. She also supports individuals experiencing mood disorders, phobias, panic disorder, and other anxiety-related conditions, and supports clients navigating grief, life transitions, and the emotional impact of chronic illness such as cancer, diabetes, and epilepsy.

She has particular expertise in the overlap between OCD and PTSD/Complex PTSD — presentations that are often misunderstood or misdiagnosed when treated in isolation. Her training includes a placement at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre's intensive inpatient OCD unit, Canada's only residential OCD treatment program, where she worked across the full spectrum of severity, including complex, treatment-resistant cases. This experience gives her a distinct ability to recognize and treat clients whose intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and trauma responses are deeply intertwined, rather than treating one condition while missing the other. She also has experience in assessment through her work in CAMH’s Brain, Body and Perception Lab, which focuses on evaluating Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Her core therapeutic approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Inference-Based Cognitive Therapy (I-CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). She tailors evidence-based treatment to each client's unique needs.

Smitha provides compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care in a safe, collaborative, and non-judgmental environment. She tailors evidence-based treatment to each person's unique strengths, goals, values, culture, identity, and lived experiences, integrating family, spirituality, language, and migration experiences into assessment and treatment when relevant. She has extensive experience supporting front-line workers and individuals recovering from trauma, and believes in every person's capacity for healing, resilience, and meaningful change. Smitha strives to create a warm, supportive space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to rebuild confidence, independence, and lasting well-being.

Smitha provides services in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam.
